ANTI-CAPITALIST AFFIRMATIONS

  • i am allowed to spend my time creating things, even if they are not beautiful.
  • there is no such thing as a “real job.” all forms of work are real and valid.
  • there is nothing that i need to accomplish to be worthy. i am already worthy.
  • doing nothing is good for my soul.
  • i am not defined by what i produce.
  • my worth cannot be measured by my paycheck, my job title, or a list of professional or academic achievements.
  • i do not need to monetize my hobbies, it is enough to spend time doing something i love.
  • i will not let society decide what success looks like. i can define what successful life looks like for me.

George W. Bush apparently believed that Iraq and Afghanistan were singled out in end times prophecy. "Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East," he told French President Jacques Chirac in a 2003 phone call, appealing to their common Christian faith as a basis for the invasion. "This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase His people's enemies before a new age begins. 99 Chirac, a Roman Catholic, promptly asked his staff to call the French Federation of Protestants and find out what Bush was talking about.ALT

If you want to know just how crazy fucked up Evangelical/Fundamentalist Christian views of the apocalypse are, and how that affects US politics, I recommend The Rapture Exposed by Barbara Rossing. She’s a (mainline) Christian theologian, so a lot of the book is about the theological and Biblical reasons why the Rapture is a horrible twisting of Christian beliefs. But she also spends a lot of time talking about just how fucked up the belief in the Rapture is, and the terrifying political and social consequences that set of beliefs has had for America.

internet censorship bill about to pass congress:

ao3 is facing a ddos attack from an overseas right-wing anonymous group because it contains “degeneracy and disgusting things like LGBT and NSFW”.

they’re not the only right-wing group that is attacking fanfiction sites because of queer & nsfw content. the Heritage foundation, the US right wing think tank that writes laws for republicans, wrote an article about how “big tech turns kids trans” in which they’re advocating for the Kid’s Online Safety Act to pass because it will give state attorney generals power to sue websites for “potentially harmful content towards minors”. in this article they point out websites like wattpad, tumblr, tiktok, twitter as sites that GOP attorney generals can and will target for censorship if this bill passes. all places where fandom, that’s mostly queer, hangs out.

if you think this bill has no chance of passing because of all the red flags it poses, think again. it currently has 38 cosponsors in the senate, and is being pushed by the democrats as a “protecting the children!!” type bill.

there are left-aligned orgs in congress rn lobbying for this bill to pass. july is extremely decisive, because if KOSA goes through to markup it’ll be bundled with the Earn It act, Restrict, and all the other bad internet bills and passed as a package, completely censoring the internet forever.

if you want to learn more about the bill, go here. also sign the open letter against it here

it’s ESSENTIAL that you call your members of congress, specifically Maria Cantwell (you can call from out of state) and tell them DO NOT PASS KOSA. this site here connects you to your members of congress and gives you a short simple script to read off of! super easy and doesn’t take much out of your day! please do this now!!

Sumerian Veteran: *has severe PTSD but doesn’t know it because the term won’t be invented for another 5000 years* I fight the same battle in my dreams every night and my relationship with my family has fallen apart.

Sumerian Healer: *saw hundreds of veterans with the exact same affliction before* You’re cursed by desert demons.

actually we have recorded texts of sumerian warriors describing symptoms that closely match ptsd, and the diagnoses was not desert demons, but rather “Those dudes you killed are still attacking you with their ghosts because you killed them”

You know what? Happy Disability Month to those who were disabled by accident. Cars, skis, ice, sand, rocks, horses, just plain bad luck. Broken bones and backs that never heal. Shoulders that can’t lift or move right. Wrists that don’t turn. Hands that can’t grasp. Brains that don’t work right anymore. Legs that don’t move anymore and eyes that won’t recover.

The shame, the blame, the frustration, the wishful thinking that tears you apart. The beauty of small victories and simple kindness. The community you build. Reshaping a life with no warning. Mourning for the person you once were. Joyfully embracing the person you now are. Happy Disability Month to you too (even if you aren’t ready to use that word yet)

hate to say it but the key to having things solved by big company customer service is you just gotta stretch the truth with them. or straight up lie. actually. was on the phone for 3 hours because they sent something to the wrong address and spoke to 10 different departments trying to figure out if anyone could go fucking get it and they’re like “uhhh but can you go get it” bitch I’m 8 hours away by car, I don’t live in the house where you sent it.

took a moment to think, called back and was just like. Hi. My package was stolen off the porch!!! Saw the cunt steal it myself!! Anyway can you please send new things to this other address for free since that’s your policy for stolen goods thank you~☆ ! and it was immediately solved.

Tumblr “feminists”: yuri is for men

Twitter dudebro weebs: yuri is for men

Yuri authors: Don’t forget to block the annoying heteros (Iori Miyazawa) don’t use my characters in your gross homophobic memes (Nio Nakatani) I’m making this manga free because I am a lesbian and I want to spread awareness and someday be able to get married to another woman in my home country (Alt Hanakage)

Now that I’m home from work I actually want to go into a bit more detail!

Iori Miyazawa (Otherside Picnic) - had a rather long rant in an interview about readers who are locked into “heterocentric values” and don’t accept that lesbians actually exist, he suggested blocking them when you encounter them on social media.

Nio Nakatani (Bloom Into You) - Sayaka’s homophobic senpai was a meme for a while with Japanese edgelords who used her as a sort of Homophobic Hero, so she lambasted them on twitter

Alt Hanakage (Senpai no Kouhai) - is an out lesbian who has talked about how her personal experiences inform her work. She made a short manga called “Ring On My Finger” about her frustration at being unable to marry another woman and made it available for free because she wants more people to understand her frustration.

And while I’m here I also want to shout out this butch x butch yuri anthology, which was spearheaded by yuri artist Natsuo Mutsumi (self-described nonbinary lesbian) and features work by many other LGBTQ mangaka including Alt Hanakage (mentioned above) and trans artist Nekobungi Sumire (who has a tumblr!! @ nekobungi )

A lot of folks are responding to the whole Reddit situation by calling for the return of decentralised forums, and I think it’s important to remember that, contrary to certain popular narratives, the reason early 2000s forum culture has fallen by the wayside is not because people are Just Lazy. Certainly, ease of use is part of it, but a much larger part of it is how vulnerable self-hosted forums are.

Basically, the problem is that even the largest and most carefully managed self-hosted forums can be rendered unusable more or less indefinitely by a single sufficiently determined hostile actor. This can take the form of both attacks on the forum’s social infrastructure (i.e., via sock-puppet accounts, botting, organised “raids”, etc.) and attacks on its technical infrastructure (i.e., via hacking, DDoS, etc.). In either case, a self-hosted forum has no real defence, and the majority of decentralised forum communities survive only by virtue of their relative obscurity; once a self-hosted forum manages to attract the attention of That One Guy who’s willing to devote his life to shitting the place up over some microscopic slight, it’s effectively game over.

Right now, there are essentially only two mitigation strategies:

  1. Gathering huge numbers of communities under a single, massively centralised technical infrastructure that’s simply too large and robust for any one hostile actor to bring down; and
  2. Hardening the community’s social infrastructure either by going private and invite only (i.e., the Discord approach), or by making use of a vast centralised pool of volunteer labour to aggressively enforce community standards (i.e., the Reddit approach).

To be clear, these are not intractable problems; other solutions may well exist. However, any proposed plan for bringing decentralised public forums back needs to address them. If you’re going in operating under the assumption that forums have become marginalised simply because corporations are evil and people are lazy, you’re setting yourself up to learn the hard way why self-hosted forums no longer seem to be capable of growing beyond a certain point.

i’m starting a movement to stop calling this shit “artificial intelligence” cause it’s fucking not. it’s not intelligent, and the things it produces are not informed by logical choices. it doesn’t know how to research sources for you. it doesn’t compose art thoughtfully or meaningfully.

call it machine-generated, text generator, chat bot, but it’s not intelligent.
